The cure is to take out the petrol tank sender unit and clean the wires that the float slides up and down on.

They're resistance wires and the float has wipers on it that contact the wires and alters the resistance as it moves up and down. Your float will be sticking half way.

The easy way to do this is to take out the first aid box tray in the real window shelf. Under that is a large hexagon shaped bung in the top of the petrol tank, it has wires connected to two terminals, disconnect the wires.

Unscrew it anticlockwise and gently lift it and the sender out. - Adrian Lumby
