SL remains most coveted Mercedes


I can understand the re-introduction of the mass-produced Volkswagen Beetle, Mini and the Mustang, which has experienced an uninterrupted production run since 1965.

However, the recently announced retro version of the 300SL — the "SL" stood for "Sport Leicht" (Sport Light) — is called the SLS AMG and has me wondering a little.

I hope that they build more than the original Mercedes 300SL which was a road-capable version of a successful race car that entered production after Mercedes received an order for 1,000 cars from New York Mercedes distributor Max Hoffman, Daimler-Benz's official importer in the USA.

The most distinctive 300SL feature was its "Gullwing" doors. (more...)
